The main gate’s cannon nest
The Kasbah of Agadir Oufella was protected by an estimated dozen cannons strategically positioned across the fortress, as well as a beautiful terreptein, a flat surface for cannons to be turn against a threat, protected by a circular parapet. These guns ensured the defence of the Kasbah against attacks from the mountains, the port and the ocean, and controlled all access tracks and roads as well as the Kasbah’s gate.
A selection of antique cannons were installed, some of them dating back to the Portuquese presence in the 16" century, and archaeological excavation has catalogued many metal cannonballs of different sizes, reflecting the variety of heavy guns to be found in the fortress over time. Unfortunately, no cannons or cannon-carts were found.
