Located outside the ramparts of the Kasbah of Agadir Oufella, clinging to the side of the mountain, the “European” cemetery was created around 1913, shortly after the start of the French Protectorate, primarily to bury military personnel. Precisely delineated graves were the final resting place of French Soldiers, legionnaires of all nationalities, Europeans who died In Agadir after 1913, and also of Muslim soldiers who fought for France.

The young adventurer Michel Vieuchange, who died In 1930 after his expedition to Smara, was buried here: A fragment of his tombstone was found during the restoration of the Kasbah’s gate. In the 1950s, graves were moved to the current European cemetery in the city, except those transferred to Casablanca or France in response to the request of the wishes of the families of the deceased.
