Lime, a natural protective coating

Like many command Kasbahs close to the sea and the salt carried by the wind slowly eating at unprotected walls, the fortress of Agadir Oufella was covered with white lime, as proven by existing traces still visible and many archive photographs.

The lime rendering includes a mixture of river sand and hydraulic lime in several layers covered with a final whitewash. A lime plaster was applied to all the walls restored in the 2020-2024 heritage preservation project, but lime also covers the surviving rammed earth sections of the wall.
