Along the harbour, below the Kasbah of Agadir Oufella, stood a fishing village called Founty. The first people there had settled because of a spring of fresh and clear water near the bay.
Much later, this village was to become a district of the city of Agadir, and the source proved generous enough to supply residents with water until the beginning of the 20" century.
After 1913, during the French protectorate, the first administrative, civil and military services were built in this historic neighbourhood. About 1750 people lived in Founty before the earthquake of February 29, 1960 which completely destroyed it.

The Founty name would be a Portuguese legacy. The Portuguese established their counter at the foot of the hill in 1505 and called it "Fonte”, source or fountain in Portuguese, and later built a fortified structure which could support a siege because of the bountiful source. Later, Founty became a village, built on the ruins of the Portuguese castle of Santa Cruz do Cabo de Gué, taken March le, 1541 by the Saadi empire after a long siege.

As Agadir was being rebuilt. the name Founty was transferred to the southern entrance of Agadir, which is why locals refer today to “Old” and “new Founty’.
