Before the walls were rendered in a lime coat, the decayed surface was scraped and revealed the lower parts of the wall which had survived. Today, you can tell which segments of the wall survived the earthquake by the deeper sheen of the lime whitewash, whereas the sections restored by the 2020-2024 heritage conservation project are covered by a much newer and paler shade of lime.
